Besan chilla is good for weight loss as it burns calories faster due to its low levels of glycemic index. That’s the reason dietitians recommend besan chilla who follows a diet plan for weight loss. Also, it is rich in soluble fiber which helps lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and many other medical problems.

A Besan Chilla provides around 10 g of protein. Besan has more good fat tha whole wheat flour. Most of the fat (about 70%) contained in besan are healthy unsaturated fats, which help to lower your cholesterol levels. 100 grams of besan has 5.6 grams of good fat while whole wheat flour has only 1.7 grams.

Besan Chilla or Besan Cheela is a delicious and healthy savory Indian pancake recipe made with nutty gram flour (besan), sweet onions, tangy tomatoes, fragrant spices and herbs. Fill the batter with your favorite grated vegetables to make your meal more nutritious, and serve as a quick breakfast, brunch, or even as a late-night snack.


  • 1 cup Gram flour (250gm)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 chopped tomatoe (mediumsize)
  • 1 chopped onion (medium size)
  • 1/4 cup cauliflower chopped
  • 1/4 cup bell pepper
  • 5 green chillies
  • Coriander leaves
  • Water
  • Oil

How to cook

Add besan, salt as needed and turmeric powder to a mixing bowl. Then add finely chopped onions, tomatoes, grated cauliflower, bell pepper. Make sure onions and tomatoes are very finely chopped.

Now add grated ginger, coriander leaves and green chilies. Add water and mix. Mix it gently and make a batter of thick but pouring consistency. Add more water if needed. I used little 1 cup.

Make Cheela

Heat a tawa or pan. If not using non stick pan, then grease it well with few drops of oil. When it is hot enough, pour one ladle full of batter in the center. Spread it as thin as possible. Regulate the flame to medium and drizzle 1/2 to 3/4 tsp of oil or ghee.

With in few minutes, you will see the edges begin to leave the pan. Flip it and cook pressing down with a spatula for thorough cooking. When you see brown spots on the cheela, you can remove it to a plate. If you like soft chillas, cover them immediately.

Serve besan chilla hot with masala tea, pickle or a chutney.
